Friendships are built on a lot of things which are important to the parties in the relationship. If those qualities are not found, it's going to hard for the friendship to survive.

Loyalty is the most important quality I seek for in a friend. A loyal friend will never betray you.

Trustworthiness is what I look for as the most important quality of a friend. I don't like it when people break my trust. Indeed loyalty would be second just as you mentioned that having someone having your back through thick and thin makes all the difference.

Being truthful to me. I can't condone anyone not telling me the truth on any matter while you claim to be my friend.

I would love to have a friend that would be willing to listen and show empathy because I've got some friends with bad attitudes that I can't even cope with in the past. I can relate very well with friends who share in my feelings and perspective.
