What pet sites do you miss that are no longer online?

I wonder how difficult would it be to bring back Cabbits, Misticpets, Boopets, PetRPG and Zetapets?
I do remember using Misticpets, it did have a couple of nice features I think the pets, maybe the bank. I haven't really played too many pet sites outside of Neopets, Subeta, and Marapets.

Ah yeah, Zetapets was pretty big, and was my first petsite outside of neopets. Brings a lot of memories!

I never got to play the game, but some of the creatures looked really cool. 🙂 The closest I could come to them would be to have the players create their own pets and mons.

I don't even remember the name of it, but there was this old griffin game with realistic genetics inspired in part by real cat genetics. Going through the process of figuring out what genes your griffin had and how to breed the fanciest griffins was very appealing to me.

There are so many pet site games I've played which have shutdown over the years. Club Penguin is one them which famously shut down in 2017.
Club Penguin was quite popular too. Apparently it was making $30 million a year in revenue before it was shut down. I’m surprised that a game making that much in revenue would still be shut down, but its a sad reality of the game industry.

Like seriously? How can they shutdown with a revenue of $30 million a year? It's clear money wasn't the reason why they had to shutdown.

Still think they could make money now if they brought it back!

Club Penguin’s revenue wasn’t the main issue here; however, a former staff member stated that it was shut down because of the stiff competition from Roblox and Minecraft. Also, Club Penguin was declining in popularity for several years prior to its closure.

As a former Club Penguin staff member from 2006-2015, it was hard to watch as CP was closed. Why did Club Penguin shut down if it had so many active players?

Club Penguin shut down largely due to growing competition from newer games such as Minecraft and Roblox. These kid-friendly games were made available for almost all platforms, including console. When you add Minecraft to the mix, you can see that Club Penguin began to slightly decline as Minecraft took off like a rocketship. But since Minecraft is less kid or family-focused, it didn’t appear to damage Club Penguin quite as much as Roblox.

Club Penguin was quite expensive to run, so it was natural that the company would look to cut costs as numbers dwindled. Unfortunately, this meant the little virtual world we love had to close down.

During the pandemic, lots of businesses had to close down because they didn’t have enough customers. This is what was happening for Club Penguin — there just weren’t enough customers to cover the costs to run the world profitably.

So if Club Pengion was expensive to run, does that also mean Neopets will be expensive to run? They were/are both ad free aren't they?

Club Penguin’s users were able to have private servers, which Neopets doesn’t offer. This made Club Penguin expensive to run according to a former staff member.

However, Neopets doesn’t offer private servers, which likely makes it cheaper to run. We’ll never really know how much it costs to run Neopets unless a staff member comes out and discusses it.

However, considering how big Neopets is, I’d say its expensive to run.

Club Penguin didn’t have traditional advertisements, but it did include various forms of in-game promotions and paid memberships that offered additional features, items, and access to exclusive areas.

Neopets isn’t ad-free. They have advertisements and Neocash.

Ah brilliant, thanks for that. I actually learnt a lot there. 😀

Both of them were expensive to run but they are making the money back from their various means of monetization. Club Penguin couldn't withstand the competition they were facing at the time when they went underground.

The one that I previously owned and created that was stolen by a partner. 😒

So much time went into it. It was wake up, check what's working, go to school, get back home, do homework, and code till sleep.

I miss playing on Subeta's predecessor, Panfu! It was a very adorable game with a strong focus on community and creativity. I also miss the original version of Marapets. It had more immersive feel to it.
Panfu was so cute. I miss playing on Chibipaws, it was a very simple but addictive site with a wide variety of pets.
