Two pet systems: One Game

I’m currently running a site that focuses entirely on pet creation and breeding for aesthetics—no stats, no competition. It’s all about the looks, with breeding for unique and beautiful markings being a major feature in development.

That said, I’ve always loved static sprite collectible games like Pokémon, Dragon Cave, and similar ones. Recently, I’ve been toying with a new idea that I’d love to bring to life: a game with static sprites—no blending, no markings, just straightforward designs. The idea actually started from a small feature on my current site—the ability to roll dice in forum posts.

Now, I could start a completely separate game to build this concept, but that would involve creating a new layout, designing all the mechanics, and basically replicating everything that goes into a pet game from scratch. It’d be a lot of effort, and most of it wouldn’t be particularly original beyond the core mechanic. Instead, I’m considering integrating this idea into my current game.

Here’s my question: what do you think of having two potentially unrelated pet systems in one game? Should I focus on blending them into a single cohesive experience, or leave them separate so players can engage with one or both as they choose?

I know Khimeros has a system like this with Khimbits, but I haven’t explored it much. Are there other examples of games that do this well? I’d love to hear your thoughts or opinions on whether this approach could work!

In my view, integrating static sprite collectible game with a pet creation and breeding system should do nicely. I think it is interesting because it combines strategies of a simulation and an action game and may be appealing to a number of players.
