Friendships are built on a lot of things which are important to the parties in the relationship. If those qualities are not found, it's going to hard for the friendship to survive.

Loyalty is the most important quality I seek for in a friend. A loyal friend will never betray you.

What's the most important quality you look for in a friend?
 
Trustworthiness is what I look for as the most important quality of a friend. I don't like it when people break my trust. Indeed loyalty would be second just as you mentioned that having someone having your back through thick and thin makes all the difference.
 
Someone who would want to listen to me and support me when I need.... Emotional support.
I know people who talks about themselves and believe that.... That's how the friendship should work.. But it should go both ways -_-"
