TikTok to be banned in America

USA will always be against what they can't control. It's why I'm not surprised they are doing so much to clamp down on cryptocurrency too. They are in a long battle with China for years now.
Pretty much agree with you and they’ve basically lost because TikTok is way too big

TikTok Prepares for Immediate Shut-Off in the U.S. on Sunday

Jan 14 (Reuters) - TikTok plans to shut off its app for U.S. users on Sunday, when a federal ban on the social media app could come into effect, The Information reported on Tuesday, unless the Supreme Court moves to block it.
If TikTok shuts off for all U.S. users, the outcome would be different from that mandated by the law. The law would mandate a ban only on new TikTok downloads on Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab or Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab app stores while existing users could still continue using the app for some time.

Under TikTok's plan, people attempting to open the app will see a pop-up message directing them to a website with information about the ban, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
TikTok also plans to give users the option to download all their data so that they can take a record of their personal information with them, the report said.
TikTok and its Chinese parent ByteDance didn't immediately respond to Reuters' request for comments.

President Joe Biden had in April last year signed a law requiring Bytedance to sell its U.S. assets by Jan. 19, 2025 or face a nationwide ban.
The companies have sought, at the very least, a delay in implementation of the law, which they say violates the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment protection against government abridgment of free speech.
TikTok said in a court filing last month that it estimates one-third of the 170 million Americans using its app would stop accessing the platform if the ban lasts a month.

I never used the platform so I'm not too upset that it's being banned here. Lots of people have moved over to Rednote, but since it's a Chinese only platform Americans have been running into Chinese censorship while using the app. Plus it's not in English, so there's a language barrier there but at least Google Translate exists to help somewhat.

Tiktok is restoring its services to users in the United States and will be back online for everyone relatively soon. What are your thoughts on the latest news?

TikTok said Sunday that it would be restoring service to U.S. users after blocking it the evening before.

In a statement, TikTok said its video platform was coming back online after President-elect Donald Trump provided assurances necessary to the company’s service providers.

"In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service," TikTok said in a post on X. "We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive."

"It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States," the company added.

The US government has lifted the ban on TikTok because of the reaction from its users. Even though it is very necessary to address privacy risks on TikTo, a complete ban is excessive and I'm glad that it was reversed.

Trump invoked a 72 days executive order to give Tiktok owners time to finalise a sale or get banned after that window.

I think Tok-tok is back on. Anyhow, there's too much money to be made and it's probably too important to voters so I don't think Republicans or Democrats will keep it off very long, but of course, I don't trust the Chinese CCP. They view the US as the main enemy, even despite the massive trading going on, and with Trump in there, I'm sure anti-American stuff will intensify because Trump despises China

Some are saying tik tok influencers are lazy punks, but I think it's cool people can make easy money, but then again, maybe the money isn't always easy. Anyhow, it could be hard work to build a tik tok empire, maybe the influence used tough side jobs to build them.

Ha, please. Tiktok didn't even have to shut down, Biden's administration never pushed to enforce the ban and Trump came along to boost his own image on 'restoring' it.

The proposed TikTok ban does not surprise me at all but I'm glad it has been resolved. I know that People have some doubts about data harvesting and Chinese government intervention. But I heard that Elon is willing to buy it. Is this true?
There was a rumor that was floating around that Elon was trying to buy it, but Tiktok denied those claims.

There’s now reports that Oracle and Microsoft are planning to purchase Tiktok, however, only time will tell what happens.

Where Oracle will run Tiktok’s global operations and Microsoft will invest.

Perplexity has also proposed a merger with Tiktok.
Perplexity AI on Sunday revised the merger proposal it had submitted to TikTok parent ByteDance. The proposal, which would create a new entity combining Perplexity and TikTok U.S., would now also allow for the U.S. government to own up to 50% of the new company upon a future IPO, CNBC has learned.

A proposal document viewed by CNBC, which was shared with ByteDance and prospective new investors, detailed the creation of a new U.S. holding company, “NewCo.”

The document proposes ByteDance contribute TikTok U.S., minus its core recommendation algorithm, in exchange for the company’s existing investors receiving equity in the new company. Perplexity AI would offer itself up in exchange for its own investors receiving a distribution of the NewCo equity.

Another social media platform bought by Elon is too much. I mean, he bought Twitter to balance out political views, but now it seems Elon is wanting everything and now Zuckerberg is this wimp, saving his own skin by sucking up to the right-wing.

Anyway, it's interesting to note that even many MAGA people see Musk as an opportunist. He's definitely the Rasputin of our time. Well, one thing that angered Steve Bannon and others was the continuation of hiring Indians for computer jobs.

I honestly hope that Elon doesn't get his hands on TikTok. The damage he did to Twitter or X now as it is called was terrible, can't believe how drastically it changed after he bought it so I can only imagine what he would do with TikTok is he had the chance.
