Instagram may launch separate Reels app to take on TikTok

Facebook(Meta) is planning on launching a new app to compete with Tiktok and branching out their reels feature from Instagram, however, this wouldn’t be the first time that Facebook has tried to launch their own stand alone video app as they launched one in 2018 with Lasso. Which was later shut down since it failed to gain any traction.

Do you think this is a good idea? Is there room for another stand alone video app? Would you be using another video app if Facebook decides to launch their stand alone reels version that will compete against Tiktok or not really?

Instagram is reportedly considering launching its short-form video feature, Reels, as a separate app as the future of Chinese-owned TikTok remains uncertain in the US.

The social media platform's boss Adam Mosseri told staff about the potential move this week, according to technology industry–focused business publication The Information, which cited a person who heard the remarks.

Instagram's parent company Meta did not immediately respond to a BBC request for comment.

In January, US President Donald Trump granted TikTok a 75-day extension to comply with a law signed by then-President Joe Biden that requires a sale or ban of the platform.

At the time, he floated the possibility of a joint venture running the company, saying he was seeking a 50-50 partnership between "the United States" and its Chinese owner ByteDance. But he did not give any further details on how that might work.

The Biden administration had argued that TikTok, which has 170 million US users, could be used by China as a tool for spying and political manipulation.

Opponents of a ban have cited freedom of speech as a reason for keeping the platform open.

In 2018, Meta launched a standalone app called Lasso to compete with TikTok but it was later shut down.

Mark Zuckerberg loves competition so much. It's very unfortunate he's not interested in improving his already existing platforms but will always be ready to launch a new one to compete with others.
Exactly. Facebook and Instagram both have a reels feature, so I wonder if they’ll be removing the feature if they launch a dedicated app for them.

I don’t think there’s room for another dedicated video app as there’s already plenty of them online.

Tiktok is giving YouTube a very hard time. If it's not because of how popular YouTube is, it would have been killed off by Tiktok. Instagram will not cope trying to rival with it.
I don’t think Tiktok is even comparable to Youtube. Youtube has a much larger user base than Tiktok. Youtube has sports channels and tv channels on their network, Tiktok doesn’t, so Youtube has the advantage.

Youtube also has 2.7 billion monthly active users where Tiktok has around 1.3 billion active users.

Their content library is also not a comparison as Youtube sees over 500 hours of video uploaded on a minute basis where Tiktok has an estimated averaged of 34 million videos uploaded per day. On the revenue side, Youtube also takes the cake with $36.1 billion in revenue where Tiktok made about $23 billion in revenue in 2024.

Correct. It's only Tiktok that comes anywhere close to what YouTube brings to the table. Whatever Mark Zuckerberg and his Meta is trying to do, it's not going end well.

I am doubtful about Facebook coming out with a standalone Reels app. Sure, Reels has been a hit on Instagram, but I'm not so sure if people want to constantly keep up with yet another video app. If they can create an experience that is unique, fun, and user-friendly, then I would consider trying it out. Until then, I will stick with TikTok and Instagram because I do not feel like taking on an additional video app.

I really don’t see think so either.. Meta tried it before with their Lasso app, then they shut it down to merge it with Facebook and Instagram reels.

I think it’s better to keep the reels section on Instagram and Facebook instead of launching another app. Especially considering the fact that their reels feature keeps users engaged on both Facebook and Instagram.

If they take that away and launch a new app, they’ll lose daily traffic and numbers on both platforms.

It's duplication of apps without anything unique to offer in it which is going to be push users to get it. Meta no longer have any creativity left to work with.
