Are virtual pet sites making a comeback?

Yes, I believe a boom is possible. Over the past year, four pet sites have launched: Santae, World of the wilds, Runetails, and Snoozelings. Additionally, two major ones are currently in development, and I’m hopeful they’ll be released soon.

We’re also seeing a rise in mobile pet games, which could indirectly help virtual pet sites grow as players explore similar experiences. On top of that, more pet games are being released on platforms like Steam, many of which have received significant media attention. This fresh publicity has brought much-needed interest to the genre, sparking curiosity and raising awareness.

What’s exciting is how the industry has expanded beyond traditional browser-based platforms. It’s now thriving on mobile and PC, with app stores and Steam contributing to this growth. The industry is much larger and more diverse than it was before, which creates opportunities for innovation and new audiences.

They are making a comeback definitely. New games are coming out, old games are being updated to have more features. I think they will never die down.

I see a resurrection happening with developers picking interest in the game. This is what I have really enjoyed over the years and trust me when I say that it has been a breather of fresh air when I see new virtual pet games coming up!

They should act fast and well too. I am expecting much too from the Devs. The comeback will being more games to play and some settings for the old games too.

I’m seeing that too, and it’s honestly exciting. There’s definitely a rise in browser-based pet sites lately, and compared to last year, there are way more games in active development, which is a great sign for the niche. It feels like we might be heading toward a new wave of browser game interest, which is something we really haven’t seen in years.

What’s also interesting is how many desktop virtual pet games have launched recently. That side of the genre has been growing quietly, but it’s definitely helped keep interest alive and pull more fans back into the space.

Also, with some major console games on the way, especially around horses and similar themes, that could bring even more attention to the virtual pet world as a whole. Plus, with Neopets getting so much media attention over the past year only adds fuel to the fire. It’s definitely a good time to be a fan of virtual pet games.

Wouldn't it be great if virtual pet websites would return? With the boom of Web3 and blockchain technologies, I think we will soon see the invention of revamped virtual pet sites, with better experiences and even real-world prizes.

Virtual pet sites games are very popular on desktop compared to consoles. They need to have more breakthrough in the consoles platform because it's where I see them still lacking more.

The boom of Web3 and blockchain technologies isn’t something that’s good for the industry. We don’t need NFT scam sites running wild using the “virtual pets” industry as a scape goat for their projects.

It already happened multiple times, especially with the “Metapals” project, which was based on Blockchain technology along with many other projects.

The company integrates AI and blockchain technology to give each “MetaPal” unique character traits, and their behavior can be personalized based on interactions with users.

MetaPals will launch 5,000 Teletubbies companions in the form of NFTs—1,100 for each of the four Tubbies and 600 for Noo-Noo the vacuum cleaner. Each mint is priced in the range of US$100 to US$200 and includes exclusive accessories.

“[We] enable the Teletubbies characters to evolve, interact and form unique bonds with users, embodying our vision of dynamic digital companionship,” says MetaPals CEO Max Giammario. It’s a strategy inspired by digital pets like Tamagotchi, and it also aligns well with a recent growth in demand for e-pets and interactive experiences.

Protocol Labs, Techstars, Tezos Foundation and BlueYard Capital have all provided financial backing for MetaPals, whose platform’s licensed characters also include Hello Kitty and Doraemon. The company says it currently has around 19,000 daily active users who have more than 208,000 interactions with its companions each day.
Needless to say, Metapals is no longer around.

Raregotchi’s long-awaited OG TOY Sale will be split into three minting stages; pre-mint, OG mint, and public mint. The pre-mint will kick things off on June 30th, with the public sale commencing on July 4th.

The first Raregotchi generation includes three founding TOYS; Alien Boy, School Kid, and Snow Cone, who each come with their own distinct and colourful artworks which tell their unique visual story. There are 1,000 NFTs for each type and 3,000 OG TOY NFTs in total, with each costing 0.25 ETH to mint. Not all are the same however, as they come in one of three sizes, with each size determining how many OG PETS the TOY can mint (either 3, 4, or 6).

Upon minting a TOY NFT, owners can either unseal the digital package in order to reveal the mystery PETS which are waiting inside, or alternatively leave it sealed and in its pristine digital container.

Owning a TOY NFT will provide owners with a host of perks, such as the chance to claim a physical vinyl TOY, access to an array of Raregotchi games, control over the production of OG PETS, voting power in the RareDAO, creating a Raregotchi lineage and PET clan, a free House mint, and much more.

These projects lead to users being scammed and losing money, so no, blockchain technology does not belong in this industry. Many Virtual pet gamers don’t care for crypto games nor nft sites. They’re only using the “virtual pets” industry to attract users to their nft projects and schemes, which they shouldn’t be doing as their games have nothing to do with pet site players nor fans.

Virtual pet sites games are very popular on desktop compared to consoles. They need to have more breakthrough in the consoles platform because it's where I see them still lacking more.
There’s a major horse game that’s coming out soon for console and PC, however, there hasn’t been too many games released for the console.

Wobbledogs was the last major console release in 2023 with Little Friends: Dogs & Cats being the second major release. It was released in 2019.

The upcoming Horse Game recently raised over $138k via their Kickstarter:

There’s also two new upcoming Pokemon games and along with a new Digimon game.

I think virtual pet sites are making a comeback. Neopets, for example, is planning a major revival with new features and real-world prizes. Other sites like AdoptMe and Marapets are also gaining popularity. That shows that they are revamping their sites.

There is no doubt that they are making a lot of changes right now. I want more virtual pet sites to come up with amazing features as Marapets is doing. It is one site where I enjoy building virtual pets.

True! The virtual pet sites are making a comeback big time. I have seen a lot of development around some virtual pet sites I visited lately. It is getting more immersive and more realistic. That's what we are looking forward to seeing in virtual pet sites.
