What Virtual Pet Sites Were Once Popular but Shut Down?

The Virtual pet game industry has seen many beloved sites rise in popularity, only to eventually shut down. While some of these games are gone, they left a lasting impact on the virtual pet gaming community and influenced many modern pet simulation games.

Some once-popular virtual pet sites that are no longer around include:
Chibifriends
Chibipaws
Venetopia
Monopets
Zetapets
Nutrinopets
Teripets
Verpets
NeuroGalaxy
Creature World
Lurapets(luraverse)
Paladore
KingdomSky
Ecritters
Kiropets
PetGamer

Many of these games had unique pet care mechanics, breeding systems, interactive worlds, and mini-games that made them stand out.

These virtual pet sites were around in the early 2000’s and were started by passionated owners. What are some of the things that you miss about these former popular pet sites?

Did you play any of these defunct pet games? Which one was your favorite? If you could bring back one classic virtual pet site, which would it be and why? Let’s remember the lost pet sites that shaped the community!

The king of pet games 10 years ago was Neopets. They’re still sitting on the throne as there hasn’t been a been a game that has been able to dethrone them yet. Neo has over 150 million registered users.
150 mil? WOW! What a database that would be to backup. lol

Neopets is the one virtual pet site that I always remember and I am very happy to still see it up and running at this time. I believe it is one of the only ones that is still around and at least thriving at this point which is an amazing milestone.

Does anyone here still use Neopets? I have not used it in a while but I am tempted to go back to it when I have some time.

I don’t play Neopets anymore, I know there are a lot of new improvements happening over there though. So, it’s a good time to start playing again. I know that @lens, @Ja sa bong, and @Heatman are still playing, though.

I still expect you to come back playing it soon enough. If you loved something, leaving it completely is always almost impossible.

You've listed some amazing virtual pet items that sadly didn't stand the test of time. But I’m so surprised you mentioned CreatureWorld, which I had completely forgotten about.
Just like CreatureWorld, Zetapets is another that went way which felt like a punch in the face. I was hoping they will find a way to make a comeback but it never happened.

Even though Zetapets didn't make a comeback, it was really a fun and interesting game from what you write. At least you can leave with the sweet memories of it.

Lurapets, part of the Luraverse, was a beloved favorite back in the day, capturing the hearts of many. Creatureworld brought its own charm as a delightful pet game. And oh, how I miss the magic of Paladore.

It’s truly unfortunate that Moshi Monsters is no longer with us.

Nostalgia! Yes indeed they were good sites for virtual pets. Lurapets was an interesting concept and really appealing to children while Creatureworld was unique and appealing for fandom lovers too. It is really great to have these wonderful memories.

I played on Maraquan Adventures before it closed down prematurely. Panfu became another virtual pet community which disappeared after providing users with distinctive virtual pet experiences.

Lurapets was also sold to Powerpets for $10,000 in 2015, which resulted in the closure of the game.

CreatureWorld also closed down sometime in between 2015-2016. It was quite an active pet site during their peak.

These images were some of their NPCs along with one of their pets.

Zetapets and Teripets were two of the sites that I had high hopes on. I wanted to see them succeed seriously, but it seems that was meant to be at all.

Zetapets was renamed and rebranded as Mythodreas, but it’s nothing like the original game since it’s not owned by the original founders of Zetapets or its developers. The concept is vastly different, and they didn’t keep all the previous user accounts from Zetapets, especially since they decided to create an entirely new game.

There’s a possibility that Teripets may return one day under its original ownership. @Amocin

The new Zatapets owners deciding not to keep accounts of old users could have been the reason for the low turnout. Assuming they knew, they would have found a way to keep the old database as that is going to be of great help to what they planned to achieve.

I agree, they could have imported the old users and emails on over to their new systems. However, they wanted to start from the ground up and build a new game. Which is a good thing on their part, but a database of over 250k-265k users would have helped them a lot. A mass email to former Zetapets users would drive in a lot of old members to their new game, especially if they were still interested in the game.

Maybe they might have another way that they wanted to do it or better still, they think to get new players so easily. Mass email would have been better to know if the old members are still interested.

I'm incredibly glad to hear TeriPets is coming back! The customization of pets was something I certainly enjoyed so much. The RPG elements were truly enticing to many users.
