How realistic do you want a virtual pet? Would you want it to be like owning a real animal that can get sick and old or die or something more casual that you don't have to worry about? This goes for really any virtual pet be it a device, video game or website.

I think a balance between realism and gameplay would suit best. Some realism might add backstory and emotion, like pets growing hungry or tired, but too much of it could make it unappealing..

I would love it to be like owning a real animal by showing emotions, being hungry, being tired or having a personal relationship with the gamer. It would be fun and interesting to be played.
Do you think if a pet is hungry it should prevent user's from utilizing certain features until their pets are fed? Such as, battling, doing quests, doing trades, using auctions or interacting on the forums? This could aid in the realism aspects. If the pet's needs aren't being attended to, then certain features aren't useable until the pet is actually cared for.
